random love

I have to admit something. I love some of my switch plates more than others...making them, that is.

 

I'm always thrilled when someone orders the Bronze Ginkgo design, because I love the process used in making this one. It has a randomness, unpredictability that I look forward to each time I make them.

The design came about when I did a custom order for a woman who had a Craftsman home. I did a little research and came up with the Ginkgo design. It was as if everything was aligned at the time, as it came together quickly and easily and best of all, she loved it.

Again, the Bronze Ginkgo switch plates are going to reside in a lovely old Craftsman style home. I just completed an order for a designer in California whose clients saw my switch plates and wanted multiples for their home. It was extra special making them, because the plates I covered were sent to me by the designer. They were the old fashioned push button type. (I had every intention of taking pictures, but after getting home from the post office realized I just plain forgot).

The fact that I forgot to take pictures, as I had intended, got me thinking. Perhaps the people that buy my switch plates, would take pictures of them in the rooms they were meant for, and send them to me. That's a lovely thought to end on.

oh baby!

Babies have a bad habit of growing out of things much too quickly. Coming up with something unique to bring to a baby shower, that baby wouldn't grown out of in a few weeks, was what I had in mind when I designed this 'Baby Steps' switch plate.

You know there's going to be plenty of diapers, burp cloths, and cute clothing to go around, so why not bring something different?

It can be made in any colour you request. If you don't know what size or style of switch plates the babies room has, do some detective work...call dad or grandma to find out.

Just make sure you order in plenty of time to allow me to make your custom switch plate and have it shipped to you in time for the shower.

young and growing

When we're young we don't have much money. Let's face it, we're always broke. The same is true for a young and growing business. You do have to get your name out there, so getting business cards made up was definitely a priority, broke or not. You need to spend money to make money, yada, yada.

I had someone design the cards for me, but wasn't' sure where to get them printed. I checked locally, and the price was incredibly high. I thought of doing it myself, but after figuring in the cost of  blanks and ink, that wasn't going to be cost or time effective for me. I asked for recommendations on one of my favourite business forums, lots of people said Vista Print. They have a number of options to choose from, so I gave it a go.



They threw in a bunch of  business card magnets, which is great, because I love to put these in my customers packages. Hopefully they won't forget me if I'm staring at them from their fridge or filing cabinet every day. The cards and magnets were in my mailbox sooner than the estimated time of delivery and looked great.

I'm running low on cards, so I went to their website the other day. They have some nice ready made designs there, so it's always fun to just window shop. One thing I noticed and had never thought of, was getting moving announcements made up if you're relocating a business or your family. My parents are moving soon and I'm going to suggest it to them. You could go to the post office, but personal is much more fun than generic!

say hello to the little brown bird

Isn't she cute? The little brown bird has made her debut at Mosaico Decor.

The premise behind this, and switch plates to come, is that perhaps I should move into a more neutral palette.

Some of my most popular designs are very colourful, so I won't be abandoning the use of colour all together. I will be experimenting with neutrals more to see if the appeal is wider.



This design will also be available in brown only. I think it'll have a woodburned  look about it, which may or may not be a good thing. Only time will tell if this new direction will take me where I want to go.

late night exposure

What's that? Is that my 'Mosaigami Pendant' on the front page of Etsy?  It was a, there's nothing on TeeVee, so I'll check out Etsy surprise, late last night.

mosaigami

Not only is the pendant new, the word is actually new...made up.

This pendant is a hybrid of gami (paper in Japanese) and mosaic. I've taken chiyoyami paper and used a technique and finish in such a way as to make it look like tiny glass mosaic tiles.

Because each one is unique, they're a lot of fun to make!
